Joined Oct 26, Messages 9. When I turn off the computer, be it by pressing the power button or by the turn off option in the start menu, windows closes normally, the screen goes no signal, even the hard disk and power leds turn off but the fan in the power supply keeps spinning.
All I can do then is keep the power button pressed for a few seconds and finally the power supply stops, or press the reset button to start the computer again or click the power switch of the power supply in the back of the computer tower off and on when clicked on again, the computer keeps turned off I had Windows XP in the same computer and it turned off normally.When a PC suddenly goes on the fritz for no apparent reason, checking the PC power supply first may save a lot of time troubleshooting the system.
A faulty PC power supply belies many intermittent computer problems. As with any troubleshooting situation, disconnect all but the necessary peripherals from the PC. Many power supplies have an external switch located at the rear of the unit. Check that it has not been accidentally been switched off. Plug the PSU power cable into a wall socket or surge protector, and turn on the computer. As an aside, the color of the motherboard light can tip off other malfunctioning components.
Lights and BIOS beep codes vary by manufacturer. Check your motherboard product manual for that information. The paper clip test, alternatively called the jumper test, allows you to verify PSU functionality when it is disconnected from the components inside a PC.
This test will identify some common issues:. First you want to turn the power switch at the rear of the power supply to the off position. Flip the switch at the rear of the PSU, and listen for the internal fan.
If you can hear the fan, this should verify the power supply is turned on. The paper clip test is a crude but effective way to confirm if your PSU needs to be replaced. It will not tell you much else. If your power supply passes the paper clip test, you still may need to identify related issues:. To perform more nuanced testing of your power supply, you will need to use or buy a multimeter. A multimeter is an instrument that measures electrical current, principally voltage voltscurrent ampsand resistance ohms.
The cost of a new PSU is relatively low, and does not justify extensive personnel hours dedicated to a complex diagnosis. I have a PSU tester, but all power supplies show a fault, regardless of actual condition. It sure would be nice to have one that gives accurate results. I have attempted to contact the manufacturer whose PSUs I use exclusively — Antec — but I have not received any response from them.

I used a Ghost backup to copy the one drive's information on to the other. Then I upgraded my other drive and wiped the 1 TB drive. Now, everything is as it was. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I became curious about the boot-up speed with the fast startup turned onso I have just measured multiple starts under that condition. Go figure. But as soon as I turned off the fast startup, my computer booted up in 18 seconds, power-on to desktop, settling down to the usual seconds, after a few boot-ups. Maybe with an SSD the fast startup is not really necessary and could even be detrimental. I dunno.
I agree that the fast boot up is a great feature. But I have been struggle is this Shutdown and Sleep mode issue for some time and I have grown tired of it. I do not like to manually shut off the laptop daily, it is also not good for it. I am willy to have a bit slower boot up vs this issue.

There is the real fix.Check cables and reset your power supply unit: Disconnect the charger from your Surface, unplug the power cable from the electrical outlet in the wall, and then disconnect any USB accessories.
