power supply doesn t turn off

Joined Oct 26, Messages 9. When I turn off the computer, be it by pressing the power button or by the turn off option in the start menu, windows closes normally, the screen goes no signal, even the hard disk and power leds turn off but the fan in the power supply keeps spinning.

All I can do then is keep the power button pressed for a few seconds and finally the power supply stops, or press the reset button to start the computer again or click the power switch of the power supply in the back of the computer tower off and on when clicked on again, the computer keeps turned off I had Windows XP in the same computer and it turned off normally. When a PC suddenly goes on the fritz for no apparent reason, checking the PC power supply first may save a lot of time troubleshooting the system.

A faulty PC power supply belies many intermittent computer problems. As with any troubleshooting situation, disconnect all but the necessary peripherals from the PC. Many power supplies have an external switch located at the rear of the unit. Check that it has not been accidentally been switched off. Plug the PSU power cable into a wall socket or surge protector, and turn on the computer. As an aside, the color of the motherboard light can tip off other malfunctioning components.

Lights and BIOS beep codes vary by manufacturer. Check your motherboard product manual for that information. The paper clip test, alternatively called the jumper test, allows you to verify PSU functionality when it is disconnected from the components inside a PC.

This test will identify some common issues:. First you want to turn the power switch at the rear of the power supply to the off position. Flip the switch at the rear of the PSU, and listen for the internal fan.

If you can hear the fan, this should verify the power supply is turned on. The paper clip test is a crude but effective way to confirm if your PSU needs to be replaced. It will not tell you much else. If your power supply passes the paper clip test, you still may need to identify related issues:. To perform more nuanced testing of your power supply, you will need to use or buy a multimeter. A multimeter is an instrument that measures electrical current, principally voltage voltscurrent ampsand resistance ohms.

The cost of a new PSU is relatively low, and does not justify extensive personnel hours dedicated to a complex diagnosis. I have a PSU tester, but all power supplies show a fault, regardless of actual condition. It sure would be nice to have one that gives accurate results. I have attempted to contact the manufacturer whose PSUs I use exclusively — Antec — but I have not received any response from them.

How to Troubleshoot a PC Power Supply

I used a Ghost backup to copy the one drive's information on to the other. Then I upgraded my other drive and wiped the 1 TB drive. Now, everything is as it was. Just upgraded to Windows 10 Home from Windows 7. Everything is running fine, except at the very end of the new Windows experience.

Except, 3 out of 5 times, the computer's power stays on and on, without powering down completely. In the end, I have to remove the battery to kill the power altogether.

I had the same issue with my Laptop. Unchecking Turn on fast start-up worked in my PC. Did this solve your problem? Yes No.

Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I became curious about the boot-up speed with the fast startup turned onso I have just measured multiple starts under that condition. Go figure. But as soon as I turned off the fast startup, my computer booted up in 18 seconds, power-on to desktop, settling down to the usual seconds, after a few boot-ups. Maybe with an SSD the fast startup is not really necessary and could even be detrimental. I dunno.

I agree that the fast boot up is a great feature. But I have been struggle is this Shutdown and Sleep mode issue for some time and I have grown tired of it. I do not like to manually shut off the laptop daily, it is also not good for it. I am willy to have a bit slower boot up vs this issue.

Love the Win 10 too much to go back. There is the real fix.Check cables and reset your power supply unit: Disconnect the charger from your Surface, unplug the power cable from the electrical outlet in the wall, and then disconnect any USB accessories. Wait 10 seconds. After that, clean everything with a soft cloth, and check for any damage. Be sure to replace damaged cables.

Plug the charger back into the electrical outlet and your Surface. This step resets the charger. Plug it in the other way: Flip the charger degrees, and check to see if the LED light comes on and if your Surface starts charging again. Try a different power source: Plug the charger into another outlet, surge protector, or power strip.

Still having issues? To replace your power supply, go to Device Service and Repair to start a replacement order. Surface power supplies are designed to work with Surface. We strongly recommend only using a genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed power supply, one that either came with your Surface or was purchased separately, to charge the battery. There is the chance that your PC isn't receiving power because of a serious issue, but it's unlikely. There are several possible reasons why a desktop, laptop, or tablet computer might not power onso it's very important that you step through a complete troubleshooting procedure like the one we've outlined below. Believe it or not, the number one reason why a computer won't turn on is that it wasn't turned on!

Как устранить ошибку «Нет питания» на настольном компьютере Dell

Before starting a sometimes time-consuming troubleshooting process, make sure you've turned on every power switch and power button involved in your computer system:. Check for disconnected computer power cable connections. A loose or unplugged power cable is one of the top reasons why a computer won't turn on. Even though your computer runs on a battery, you should make sure that the AC adapter is plugged in properly, at least during troubleshooting. If you regularly keep your computer plugged in, but it has wiggled loose and now the battery is empty, your computer may not be getting power for this reason.

Plug your tablet, laptop, or desktop directly into the wall if it's not already. In other words, remove any power strips, battery backups, or other power distribution devices between your PC and the wall outlet. If your computer starts getting power after doing this, it means that something that you removed from the equation is the cause of the problem, so you'll likely need to replace your surge protector or other power distribution devices.

Even if nothing improves, continue troubleshooting with the computer plugged into the wall to keep things simple. Perform a "lamp test" to verify power is being provided from the wall.

Your computer isn't going to turn on if it's not getting power, so you need to make sure that the power source is working properly. We don't recommend testing an outlet with a multimeter. Sometimes a tripped breaker can leak just enough power to show proper voltage on the meter, leaving you with the assumption that your power is working.

Putting a real "load" on the outlet, like a lamp, is a better option.

Power Supply won't turn off automatically

Verify that the power supply voltage switch is set correctly if you're on a desktop. If the input voltage for the power supply unit PSU does not match the correct setting for your country, your computer may not power on at all.

Remove the main battery in the laptop or tablet and try using AC power only. Yes, it's perfectly fine to run your portable computer without the battery installed. If your computer turns on after trying this, it means that your battery is the cause of the problem and you should replace it. Until you get it replaced, feel free to use your computer, so long as you're close to a power outlet! Carefully inspect the power receptacle on the laptop or tablet for damage. Aside from straitening a bent pin or cleaning out some dirt, you'll probably need to seek the services of a professional computer repair service to correct any major problems you see here.

Be sure to remove the laptop's internal battery to avoid the risk of shock if you work on this yourself. Replace the computer's power cable or AC adapter. On a desktop, this is the power cable that runs between the computer case and the power source.

The AC adapter for a tablet or laptop is the cable that you plug into the wall to charge your battery it usually has a tiny light on it. A bad AC adapter is a common reason why tablets and laptops won't turn on at all.
